Traincam

Webcam by locomotive

Traincam was a webcam project for MySwitzerland.com (Switzerland Tourism) which created photos from a locomotive.

A special camera was installed in an SBB Re 460 078-9 locomotive, which took a photo every 10 minutes and transferred it to an FTP server via GSM.

Web-Gallery-Integration

The images were published as webcam images on the traincam.ch website. The images were automatically uploaded using an image upload script and integrated into a web gallery. These photos were also published on the Switzerland Tourism website.

Between 2000 and 2014, hundreds of thousands of images were created and posted online, delighting railway fans around the world.

In 2014, the project was declared complete.

Railway fans to TV shows

Traincam was featured in newspapers, magazines, and TV shows around the world, gaining a large fan base. Many railway enthusiasts (also known as railfans) sought out the locomotive and positioned themselves strategically to take a photo. Some of them succeeded.

An amusing anecdote from our team: During a maintenance operation at Bern station, one of our developers accidentally touched the locomotive's horn while adjusting the camera. Passers-by got a huge fright!

We now know where the horn is located.
